Over 500 persons were contaminated with fungal meningitis after they had administered Methylprednisolone injections produced by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). More than 30 individuals died from this illness. Nobody must have doubted that the contamination was a great tragedy for some persons and their families. Nevertheless, anti-doping organizations tried to benefit from the case. What did they do? They began to blame anabolic steroids. It was affirmed by the media that anabolic steroids could lead to the fatal condition fungal meningitis.
Recently the Bay County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation linked with illegal manufacture of anabolic steroids. It found out that anabolic steroids were produced by certain underground lab in unsterile conditions. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported that they conducted the investigation in order to prevent contamination with fungal meningitis in future. According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, if anybody administers anabolic steroids manufactured in unsterile conditions, he/she may be contaminated with fungal meningitis.
In fact, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated own ignorance connected with anabolic steroids and risks linked with contamination with fungal meningitis. Someone may get fungal meningitis, if he/she uses drugs that are injected directly into the central nervous system. Methylprednisolone Acetate injections are administered into the central nervous system. That’s why these contaminated corticosteroids led to the fungal meningitis outbreak. When it comes to anabolic steroids, they are not injected into the central nervous system. They are mainly administered into muscles. That’s why it is impossible to get contaminated with fungal meningitis while administering anabolic steroids. If you take anabolic steroids that are produced in unsterile conditions, you may get some side effects. But you will never face fungal meningitis while taking anabolic steroids for therapeutic or even for athletic needs.
So, the fungal meningitis outbreak resulted from intake of contaminated Methylprednisolone Acetate injections was just a condition to demonize anabolic steroids. Note, please: Methylprednisolone Acetate is not an anabolic steroid. It belongs to corticosteroids.
