Officers of the UK will be not able to stop sportspersons importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Although administration of steroids is forbidden in sports, personal usage of these medications is legal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illegal in this country. So, if someone desires to import amount of anabolic steroids that is significantly large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries modified legislation linked with import and intake of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t want to modify steroid laws for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ironically, however the government of the UK doesn’t desire to make personal administration of steroids illicit, Britain athletes are banned for lifetime, if they administer anabolic steroids. When it comes to the WADA Code, sportspeople who take banned medicines are banned for 2 years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, notices that it is necessary to have a universal law related to sentencing. This minister insists on at least four years or even longer. While he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh sanction. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, states that certain sanctions must be softened.
Hugh Robertson admits that there are various points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesperson for Hugh Robertson has announced that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she arrives to London. But the amount of steroids should confirm that he/she possesses them only for self-administration. The spokesperson has noticed that it is not criminal for a sportsperson to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any athlete is caught using forbidden products, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD claimed that they would cooperate with border control officers. Information about sportspersons will be utilized by anti-doping officials.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
