One of the original corresponds of CBS’s 60 minutes presented an interview with Roger Clemens

Mike Wallace, a well-known investigative journalist, who was one of the initial correspondents of CBS’ 60 Minutes died, when he was 93 years old. This correspondent hosted fascinating interviews with world well-known individuals. The most recent stories were about the former professional baseball player Roger Clemens and accusations connected with administration of anabolic steroids and HGH by this person. Mike Wallace’s last appearance on TV was linked with this case.
The interview with Roger Clemens about steroids was hosted in January, 2008. Rusty Hardin, the defense attorney for Roger Clemens, arranged the appearing of this baseball star in the Show 60 Minutes. Roger Clemens had to defense himself against accusations of Brian McNamee, his former personal coach. This trainer accused Roger Clemens in usage of anabolic steroids and HGH. He collaborated with investigators of Mitchell Report, when they tried to define the widespread of steroid use in the Major League Baseball.
Wallace didn’t enforce Clemens to say that he administered steroids. He just encouraged him to prove to others that he had administered neither steroids, nor HGH. Clemens stated that he would be able to pull a tractor with his teeth, if he had utilized steroids.
The interview of Clemens was a calamitous public relations ploy for Rusty Hardin. It was not a perceptive interview. But it renewed the interest after Wallace had died.
Actually, Wallace presented much more interesting interviews during his career. The steroid interview with Roger Clemens was not the most interesting. Why did it draw all people’s attention?
Other interviews of Wallace are quite interesting. Wallace made an interview with the lawyer of the president Richard Nixon and the assistant to the president for Domestic Affairs John Ehrlichman during the Watergate scandal. Wallace called the Watergate scandal “perjury”. He enumerated such methods of Richard Nixon, as thefts, spying, obstruction of justice, etc. The scandal led to resignation of the president Richard Nixon.
Wallace arranged also an interview with the Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini. The reporter named him a “lunatic”. However, he was quoting the president Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt.
Another person that was interviewed by Wallace was the Vice President of Research and Development at a tobacco company. Jeffrey Wigand admitted that executives of the company lied before the Congress about their knowledge about nature of nicotine.
Although these interviews were significant, people directed their attention to insignificant interview with Roger Clemens. It may be because while lying of Roger Clemens before the Congress may cause federal struggle against steroids, the war on nicotine will never exist.

However a steroid distribution organization avoided face-to-face interactions, the dealers were caught

An investigation that lasted 2 years detected and shut an immense underground lab related to steroids. The investigation was led under name “Operation Bulk Up”. It was a well-planned activity of the certain authorities in Lebanon (Ohio).
As it was found out, a distributor of steroids distributed these drugs to members of the Cardio Strength Center of the YMCA. So, when the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office was informed about it, the investigations began. The authority made a decision to send an officer that had to pretend being a member of the YMCA to the steroid dealer. Major John Burke, the leader of the Warren County Drug Task Force, was chosen for this purpose.
Mike Caroll, the President and CEO of the YMCA, was the only individual at this association that was told about the investigation. He could keep all things he knew about the operation of the Drug Task Force in secret. So, a huge steroid distribution organization was detected.
32 persons were involved in the illegal activity linked with selling of steroids. They were accused in corrupt activities, trafficking and possession of steroids. The investigation intended to detect just producers and distributors of steroids. Although it didn’t focalize on persons that got these drugs, the officers mentioned that professional athletes and bodybuilders belonged to the customers.
The law enforcement seized 600,000 dollars that were claimed to be a profit from selling of steroids, 300, 000 dollars in cash and vehicles and 100 weapons.
Mike Caroll, the President and CEO of the YMCA told openly to media about the results of the investigation. He was not afraid to note that he had participated in this activity to catch the criminal organization. Caroll said that he was very happy to find out about the positive results.
It is important to notice that it was quite difficult to detect the criminal organization. The undercover agent had to put efforts to purchase steroids from a dealer. As a result of the investigation, an underground laboratory in Tennessee was detected. It produced steroids in injectable form. The raw was bought from China. The leaders of distribution were Ronald Herbort and Matthew Geraci.
According to Major Burke, personal interactions between dealers and customers were avoided in this organization. There was a specific organized locker system which helped to prevent direct interactions.
Although this activity linked with manufacture and distribution of steroids was well-organized, the authorities could detect it to shut the laboratory. This investigation is an example that confirms following statement: if law enforcement gives chief priority to such operations, positive results may be achieved.
